5 minutes every hour, or maybe every other hour would be a more reasonable figure. So even if you did have the background where ear-training would help you much more, 5 minutes a day isn't enough. You should be practicing guitar at least an hour, so 5 minutes of ear training aside from that really isn't going to do that much. If you're not a beginner and already play tons of music that's great, but think of it this way: You play 1 song that's 5 minutes of ear training. You really need more time with your instrument and making music on it before ear-training (and theory) become easier to learn - it still takes a long time though even then. Even in college, we expect students to have played 4-7 years before we even put them in an ear-training class. So it's really of little benefit until after you learn to play quite a bit. If you learn to play more music your ear will develop naturally as you do it - it's like "automatic ear-training".Īnd doing interval ear-training doesn't really help you learn songs by ear. There's this weird idea out there that people need to "study ear training" and it's not really the whole picture. I would strongly encourage you to forget about ear training and just learn to play more music.
